Along the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula lies an amazing outcrop of ancient volcanic basalt composed of the remnant cooled lava flows of ancient volcanic activity. This amazing outcrop, estimated to be 1.7 billion years old, is located on Presque Isle, a 323-acre peninsula extending into Lake Superior on the north end of Marquette, Michigan. Blackrocks is a must-see in Marquette!

Presque Isle Park and Blackrocks Beach

A local gem for visitors and Marquette residents alike is the popular Presque Isle Park. From downtown Marquette, just follow Lake Shore Boulevard north along the lake for about 3 miles to the entrance of the park. This stunning park was established in 1886, offering vast views of Lake Superior. From the entrance, you’ll merge into Peter White Drive, the main road forming about a 2 mile loop through the peninsula. The park is open and free to visitors daily from 7am -11pm.

Peter White Drive can be accessed by car, bike, or by foot. However, it is important to note that Peter White Drive is restricted to non-motorized traffic during the following dates and times:

  • Monday, Wednesday 6pm-11pm
  • Tuesday, Thursday 7am-1pm
  • Saturday, Sunday 7am-10am

During the summer months, you’ll regularly find hikers and bikers traveling the peninsula loop. This is a narrow road, so be sure to drive slowly and take in the scenery as you watch for bikers and hikers. Activities NOT permitted at the park include camping, hammocks, and fires. Dogs are not permitted within Presque Isle Park unless in enclosed cars.

Blackrocks at Presque Isle Park

On your journey along Peter White Drive you’ll find a small parking area with a rocky path that leads out to the Blackrocks outcrop, and a second path down to Blackrocks Beach. Both paths are somewhat rough and rocky with exposed tree roots and rocks; be cautious as you walk out to the outcrop and down to the beach. I’ve included a few images of the entrance from the parking area and trail leading out to the outcrop and beach below.

Lake Superior Views

The video below spans the width of the Blackrocks outcrop, panning the beautiful views of Lake Superior. Photos and videos cannot do this place justice; it is something you’ve got to experience in person!

A Cold Dip in Lake Superior

If you’re feeling bold, you can jump from Blackrocks into the cold waters of Lake Superior. This is a popular jumping and swimming spot for visitors. However, the surface of the outcrop can be slick after rain, and puddles form throughout the outcrop creating an uneven landscape. Exercise caution, and as always, jump at your own risk!

Native Plants of Presque Isle

Observing the peninsula on foot or by bike allows a closer look at this unique landscape and the abundant native plants and fungi. Over 100 native plants can be found within the forested peninsula, from ferns to conservative wildflowers. I’ll share a few photos of some of the more unique species below.
