New Mexico’s Santa Fe National Forest is home to clear blue skies, stunning scenery, wildflowers, and an abundance of hiking trails. Each time I visit New Mexico, I am reminded why the state is known as the Land of Enchantment. New Mexico is home to a wide range of stunning landscapes, colorful sunsets, indigenous culture, and nature’s quiet beauty. From high plains and deserts to mountains, there’s no shortage of places to explore. A stunning hike I have enjoyed in the Santa Fe National Forest is the scenic 11,400 foot Nambe Lake Trail.

Nambe Lake Trail Topography
Terrain and Elevation Gain | Nambe Lake Trail
The trailhead for the Nambe Lake Trail is located at the Santa Fe Ski Basin parking lot. The street address for the ski basin is 1477 NM-475, Santa Fe, NM 87501. The trail lies within the Pecos Wilderness System, and is an out-and-back trail 6.6 miles in length. The hike to Nambe Lake is considered strenuous, with over 2,000 feet in elevation (2,057 to be exact!) It will take you between 4 to 4.5 hours to complete the trail. There are many scenic stops along the way to rest and enjoy the scenic views!
Native Plants & Fungi | Santa Fe National Forest
The Nambe Lake Trail is home to an abundance of native wildflowers. Below I have shared a handful of the wildflowers I observed on my mid-September hike. Some of the more striking species include the broad-leaved Marsh marigold pictured below. In the Great Lakes region, marsh marigold is solid gold, but the broad-leaved version is really striking. My personal favorite is Fireweed, with its beautiful purple-pink flowers.
Wildlife | Santa Fe National Forest
Wildlife is supported by numerous habitats within the Santa Fe National Forest. You may observe mule deer, grouse, quail, and doves. Additionally, you may observe marmots and pikas at higher elevation. During my hike, I observed a beautiful gray Canada Jay and a Dusky Grouse. I’ve shared brief videos of both of these birds below.
